How we rate — the ErrorCodePedia triage

When an error code flashes, the first thing you need is not a wall of text — it is a quick, honest read on how serious it is, whether you can safely fix it, and what it might cost. Our ErrorSnapshot triages every one of the 93+ codes we cover on three measures, plus a clear safety flag. We are independent and not affiliated with any manufacturer.

Safety comes first. When a code involves gas, carbon monoxide, refrigerant, or high voltage, we mark it clearly and tell you to shut off the power (and gas or water) and call a licensed technician — we never dress a hazardous repair up as an easy DIY.

DIY difficulty

1–5

How hard the fix is for a careful owner. A 1 is a simple reset or cleanup; a 5 is best left to a professional — including anything involving gas, refrigerant, sealed systems, or high voltage, which we always score at the top.

Urgency

1–5

How soon you need to act. A 1 can wait; a 5 means stop using the appliance now, before a small fault becomes a flood, a fire, or a carbon-monoxide risk.

The rough cost to put it right — $ is a cheap DIY part or reset, $$ is a technician repair, and $$$ is a major job where “repair or replace?” is a real question.

How we assign the ratings

Each rating is an editorial judgment, made consistently across every code from the manufacturer's documentation and established repair guidance — not scraped numbers and not AI guesses. We read what the code actually means, its common causes, the real fix, and when the manufacturer itself says to call for service, then rate all three measures on the same scale so they mean the same thing from one code to the next. Safety always overrides convenience: if a fix touches gas, combustion, refrigerant, or mains voltage, difficulty is at the top and the safety flag is on.

They are a starting point, not a repair manual. Codes and steps vary by model, so always unplug the appliance before servicing it, follow your model's manual, and when in doubt, consult a qualified technician.

Why we built our own system

Most error-code pages just restate the manufacturer's definition. That is useful, but it does not tell you whether to grab a screwdriver or the phone. By triaging every code the same way, we can rank the most urgent stop-use codes, the easiest DIY fixes, and the ones that genuinely need a pro — so you spend your time and money in the right place, safely.
